Balboa Park Features and Highlights


If you are looking to visit one of the most famous urban parks in San Diego, it helps when you know what is waiting for you. The balboa Park offers a lot for the interested visitor. From a colorful art village to free concerts  out doors to strolling down any of its trails, you will find that there are so many things that you can enjoy what it has to offer.


The ark spans a total of 1,200 acres and is certainly one of the most recognizable landmarks around San Diego. If you are planning to go there this weekend, here are some of the things that you should not miss out.


Free-tours led by Rangers

For peel that want to get a lay of the parks land, a guided tour by the rangers would e a good activity to pursue. This is an excursion that lasts for an hour every Sunday and Tuesday. The meet up is at 11 am at the park’s Visitor Center. The guides will talk about the parks history, the unique buildings and architecture peppered throughout, the botanical treasures in the landmark, as well as the importance of conservation in the park.


Sunday concepts at Speckles Organ Pavilion

The Speckles Organ Pavilion is at the heart of the park. It is the house of the Speckles Organ which features 5,000 pipes. They vary in sizes and lengths and it is the largest outdoor organ in the world. It is kept inside this vaulted structure and its sounds can be heard all throughout the center of the park.


Civic organists are bee invited to perform on a weekly basis at the pavilion. The concerts are free and start at 2 pm every Sunday. These are concerts that feature local organists. Monday evenings in the summer usually means that internationally-renowned organists are going to play at the pavilion- something that visitors should not dare miss out on too.


Jazz concerts at Panama 66

This hip eatery is located at the Museum of Art. Aside for its offering of sumptuous farm to table meals, it is also known for is cocktails and its craft brews. On top of that, it is known for the jazz concerts that are held on the courtyard. This usually happens on Wednesdays and starts 8:30 pm till about 2:30 pm until 11:30 pm.


Spanish village

This is considered as a hidden gem of the park. This is a space that is filled with tiny studios that are o occupied by artists. It was built in the year 1935 and was designed to resemble an old Spanish village. The US Army used the area back in WWII as temporary barracks. It a then reclaimed by artists in 1947. At present, it is supported by 200 artists. It is charming and visitors will love seeing the artists as they work. People can even take part in workshops and classes too which are available all year round.   


Of course, your trip to the park is not going to be complete without a relaxing picnic or taking a scenic stroll around it. There are many good spots for such activities and the park certainly offers all that you want and need for a fun and laid-back day for you and for your family.

It has a  deep-water harbor that is natural it is also known for the extensive beaches that it is peppered with and it is also  known for its association with the Navy. It has also emerged recently as a biotechnology and a healthcare center.


It is historically the home of the Kumeyaay people. It is also the first site that was visited by the Europeans on what is now known as the United States’ West Coast. It is the seat of the county of San Diego and is also the region’s economic center as well. It is also the center of the Tijuana-San Diego metropolitan area.


The main economic engine of the city is banked on  defense related activities, military, international trade, tourism, as well as manufacturing. They area has since been considered a center for biotechnology research thanks to the presence of the UCSD and its affiliated UCSD Medical Center.
